University of Bergen : University Library

Off-site access to digital resources etc.

The University Library subscribes to a large number of databases and electronic journals. Many of these are accessible only to employees and students at the University of Bergen, due to limitations in the license agreements.

In order to ensure compliance with their regulations the vendors have introduced mechanisms which deny all computers outside the University campus access to their databases etc. University of Bergen employees and students may still access these resources when they work or stay outside the University campus by using a so-called proxy server (also called cache server).

This is a server which will assist users who are entitled to it in getting access to the relevant web address. Since the proxy server is connected with the University network, the users will thus get access to those databases and electronic journals that they are entitled to.

Employees and students who use a telephone connection when they stay outside campus, do not have to use the proxy server, since they will always  be regarded as belonging to the University of Bergen. This is also the case for users with the broad band solution from the University of Bergen/Nextgentel, if they have registered as "UIB-intern").

How to use the proxy server

All you need to do is to tell the web reader that you want to use this service. The procedure varies a bit depending on which web reader and which version you use.

If you are in doubt, click here to find out which web reader you use.

You must have your own user name and password for the proxy server.
You can obtain this here for employees, and here for students.

Note! In order to use the University of Bergen proxy server you must have general access to the University's network resources. For more information about this see:
