Et klassifikasjonssystem tar sikte på å ordne bøker og annet informasjonsmateriale etter innhold og delvis etter form.
Det systemet vi bruker for ny litteratur på Universitetsbiblioteket, ble utarbeidet av amerikaneren Melvin Dewey i 1873 for et bestemt bibliotek. Systemet er senere blitt utvidet og revidert og brukes nå i mange land.
Desimalklassifikasjonen bygger på en inndeling av all menneskelig viten i 10 hovedklasser, betegnet ved tallene 0 til 9, vanligvis skrevet med 3 sifre.

100 Philosophy & psychology
200 Religion
300 Social sciences
400 Language
500 Science
600 Technology
700 Technology
800 Literature 900 History & geography
Hver av klassene kan deles i 10 underavdelinger, og hver av disse igjen i 10 seksjoner. På denne måten har en fått 1000 grupper som betegnes ved tallrekken fra 000 til 999. Hver av disse kan deles videre opp, og da settes alltid punktum etter tredje siffer.
Avdelingene på medisinsk, odontologisk og juridisk fakultet bruker et annet system for sine fag.
Skjønnlitteraturen er ikke inndelt etter Dewey.
