1.George Ossian Sars was born 20 April 1837 in
Florø community and christened the same year in Kinn church. In 1852
he entered Bergens katedralskole and gained an average grade for
natural sciences. In 1854 when his family moved to
Oslo he gained entrance to Kristiania katedralskole.
2.His interests in marine life were led by a publication by the
Sweedish professor W.Lilljeborg. G.O.Sars published his own
work “Om de I Christiania Omegn forekommende Cladocerer
1861.” = “On the freshwater crustaceans occurring in the vicinity
3.In 1864 Ossian travelled to Lofoten on a fisheries
grant. His fishery research continued until 1893. He
described the development of cod eggs and the migrations of
cod fry. From 1870 after his father’s death he worked as
a zoologist at the university.
