Books may be borrowed for 4 weeks. Reference books and journals are
however to be used in the library only.
A library card is needed to borrow books. In the case of students, the
University ID card works as their library card. Members of staff use
their staff ID card. The borrower number is written on the back of the
card. Other users are required to order a library card from the
Electronic catalogue: Bibsys
Bibsys is the electronic common catalogue of the Norwegian universities.

You can search for literature and order it from your own computer by
using Web Bibsys. All you need to do is find in the database the item(s)
you are interested in and follow the instructions to order loans or
If you order from the user terminals in the library:
1. click on ’Skriv ut bestilling’ (‘print out order’) at the top of the
screen on your right hand side;
2. write your full name and borrower number;
3. hand in your print-out to the circulation desk staff.
Closed storage rooms
The storage rooms in the Arts Library are not open to the public. Items
must thus be ordered by the user and fetched for them. When you hand in
your order, you will be informed when the item(s) will be ready for
collection. Please note that items ordered through Bibsys on the
Internet are not ready for collection until the following day after 2.00
Please note also that members of staff as well as hovedfag/MA students
do have access to the Dewey storage room. They can fetch the items they
wish to borrow themselves and have them checked out on the spot. Same
procedure applies to the Grieg Academy Library.
You may check yourself what you have on loan through this service.
You are given information about checking out and due dates and about
when you reserved or booked items.
All you need is your borrower number and a password. The password is
sent to you. In addition, you can order up to five permanent topic
searches in Bibsys. Once a week you are updated by e-mail on new
acquisitions and orders within the chosen topics at both the University
Library of Bergen and the other Bibsys libraries.
Borrowing from other faculty libraries at the University of Bergen
Users are required to go to the library personally and get the relevant
items themselves when borrowing from the following faculty libraries:
Law, Psychology, Mathematics/Natural Science and Social Science.
When borrowing from the Medicine and Odontology libraries, users may
contact the department service (’instituttjenesten’) at the Arts Library
Only students and staff members at the University of Bergen can use the
interlibrary loan service. Please note that photocopies cost NKR 60 per
article. Students are required to pay cash for the article as they pick
it up. Staff members are required to provide the borrower number of
their institution as they place their order.
Distance education students
Books borrowed from the Bergen University Library collection can be sent
to students taking distance education and living outside the Bergen
