SamEng:  The influence of temperature (110-180 degrees) on selected quality pa
         rameters of shea (Butyrosperum paradoxum) butter and the relationship
          of these parameters with media of extraction and degree of purity wa
         s investigated. IUPAC methods of Analysis of oils were used. Accumult
         aion of free fatty acids was observed and was attributed to heat acce
         lerated decomposition of the glycerides in oil, i.e. auto-oxidation,
         indicating that high temperatures accelerated rancidity. Influenve of
          media on these parameters showed no significant difference (P> 0.05)
          except for colour and yields with increase in temperature. Alkali re
         fining significantly reduced acid levels (P<0.05) in the oils by over
          70% but sharply increased peroxide values as a result of the removal
          of natural antioxidants and hence exposure of the unsaturated carbon
          bonds to oxygenation. The selected quality parameters showed no sign
         ificant difference in the refined oils with respect to extraction tre
         atment.

         an aim of establishing possible endemic equilibria within a community
         . Some criteria are proposed via various changes in some parameters w
         ith the objective of deriving conditions for eradicating the disease.
          Increase in the human recovery rate and in the rate of snails with a
          reduction in the contact rate within contaminated waters, are the ma
         jor parameter changes that are discussed in this paper.

SamEng:  In 1997, the JGOFS Scientific Steering Committee began to discuss an
         extensive JGOFS synthesis and modelling phase. With a shift in emphas
         is toward data analysis and biogeochemical modelling, the JGOFS SSC h
         as decided to restructure its process study planning groups. The new
         groups will be called JGOFS synthesis groups for the North Atlantic,
         Indian, Equatorial Pacific and Southern oceans. They will be responsi
         ble for providing the international perspective on national activitie
         s in these regions.Their goals are to enhance national syntesis effor
         ts, to identify JGOFS biogeochemical data and related data sets for t
         he regions, to adssist the development and validation of regional mod
         els of ocean bio-geochemistry, and to report their efforts to JGOFS a
         nd other international bodies.

SamEng:  Several methods were investigated for multiple organochlorine pestici
         de residues in Fish, Water and Sediments. The cost of materials and s
         olvents w the driving factor in looking at miniaturised methods. Howe
         ver, for the Fish due to large amounts of co-eluted lipids it was fou
         nd inevitable to use methods that require large amounts of material b
         ut yield low amounts of lipids. The lipids being non-polar, as the or
         ganochlorines presented the biggest problem. Method C4 (in text) yiel
         ded the lowest amount of co-eluted lipids and will be adopted for fis
         h analysis. The miniaturised methods can handle water and sediment an
         alysis. Prelimanary investigations have shown presence of Lindane, p,
         p-DDE and p,p-DDT in Fish and the tap water analysed. Only qualitativ
         e determination was carried out and tentative confirmation was done o
         n a slightly polar CP-SIL column. Analysis was done by use of an HP 5
         890 series II gas chromatograph equiped with a **63Ni electron Captur
         e Detector.

SamEng:  Different vaccination strategies against measles have been applied in
          the world due to varying epidemiological and environmental condition
         s between countries. However, not all of the diverse strategies can b
         e optimal to every country. Uganda's case has been our primary concer
         n of investigations to the noble cause of achieving national goals in
          the public health sector which is economically constrained. Two appr
         oaches to vaccination namely: 1. vaccinating a constant proportion p
         at a fixed age a3; 2. vaccinating a proportion p at a rate v(a), wher
         e a is the age of the individual being vaccinated, have been examined
         . The possibilities of eradicating or minimising the measles infectio
         n are analyzed focusing on the conditions under which the effective r
         eproduction rate can be reduced to value just below one(1), hence det
         ermining the critical proportion pc and the corrresponding age a3* to
          vaccinate. Our model simulations indicate that measles eradication i
         s possible with a single dose strategy if 97% if all children are vac
         cinated at the age of 12 months in Uganda, otherwise a two dose scedu
         le is sought. Further, this study reveals that it is more economical
         to vaccinate a constant proportion pc at a fixed age a3* than vaccina
         ting a proportion pc at a rate V(a).

SamEng:  This paper considers the task of obtaining accurate values of solar r
         adiation by the use of a computational empirical model based on some
         meteorological parameters which are readily available such as sunshin
         e hours, amount of cloud cover and the altitude of the location. Quan
         tified solar insolation is important in the design, operation and eva
         luation of the efficiency and performance of both active and passive
         solar devices. Further more, the correlation will go a long way in as
         certaining areas of potential solar energy utilisation and/or applica
         tion. Solar radiation for different locations is not available in the
          national meteorological department archives mainly due to lack of eq
         uipment. To assess the accuracy of the suggested correlations, global
          solar insolation on a horizontal surface was measured for nine month
         s at Makerere University and the measured values have been compared w
         ith those generated using the empirical model.

SamNor:  Kamskjellklekkeriet i Øygården har i 1997 videreført arbeidet fra 199
         6 med utvikling av en kondisjoneringsstrategi for stamskjell som kan
         sikre til på kvalitetsegg til larveproduksjon ved klekkeriet. Det er
         gjenommført gytinger for 41 grupper av stamskjell fra Hordaland og Tr
         øndelag, bestående av totalt 618 dyr. Av de kondisjonerte stamskjelle
         ne produserte 50% egg. Antall egg produsert per skjell var mellom 10
         og 20 mill. Klekkeprosenten var i gjennomsnitt 14,3% for alle gruppe.
          Larveproduksjonen økte med 34% i forhold til 1996, og 19,2% av D-lar
         vene nådde frem til settling. Produksjonsmålet på 6 mill. stk. 2 mm p
         ostlarver ble nådd. I vekstanlegget ved Espevikpollen vokste yngelen
         langsommere enn forventet og dødeligheten var høyere. Utsetting av po
         stlarver i sjøanlegg i Ulvesundet gav god vekst og overleving. Totalt
          ble det produsert, 1,9 mill. stk. 15 mm yngel, slik at målet om 1,5
         mill. yngel ble nådd.

SamEng:  It is shown that Helmholt's equation comes from the well known wave e
         quation. The problem and the Boundary Integral Formulation of the Lap
         lace's problem are presented. The first and second stage of Boundary
         Element method for the interior Laplace problem are given. A test pro
         blem is chosen and simulated, using Matlab package. The results were
         used to illustrate Convergence of Boundary Element Method with mesh r
         efinement. The resulting graphics are also presented.

SamEng:  A population is divided into two groups: Group I consisting of young
         and sexually immature children, aged between 0 - x years and Group II
          of sexua active and mature adults aged x years and beyond. A system
         of delay-differential equations is formed for each group. The dynamic
         s of the disease is then analysed in Group II since it is this group
         that plays an important role in the spread of disease. The existence
         and/or stability of possible equilibria for Group II, and also for th
         e whole population are discussed. The threshold value for the infecte
         d in the population and the possible time interval between which the
         infected in the population will start to decline are estimated.

         ity Students' community on thespread of HIV/AIDS epidemic is done. St
         udents associate sexually as a result of social functions, hall proxi
         mity, same degree programme, same academic year, same home district,
         same 'A' level school and other factors other than those above. The n
         umerical analysis shows that: (i) amongst the males, those doing the
         same course as their partners are at a greater risk of infection whil
         e amongst the females those who were at the same 'A' level schools wi
         th their partners are at a greater risk of infection. (II) All studen
         ts who associate sexually are at risk of getting infected with the vi
         rus. However, in general, the females are at a higher risk of infecti
         on than the males.

SamEng:  In this paper a mathematical model for transmission, control and trea
         tment of syphilis infection within a hetertosexual community is formu
         lated and analysed. The equations of the model are delay-differential
          equations. The purpose of the model is to study the effect of treati
         ng different proportions in different developmental stages of the dis
         eases, on the persistence of the disease within a community. Analytic
         ally, threshold conditions for existence, uniqueness and stability of
          equilibrium levels (disease free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium
         ) have been determined. Results of the simulation of the model using
         software packages Solver and Quarttro pro are given.

SamEng:  The study establishes the levels of metallic pollutants in tubers of
         cocoyams (Dioscorea alata) and soils exposed to wastes which directly
          or indirectly come from industries situated in Kampala central indus
         trial area. Cocoyam (Dioscorea alata) tubers and soils were sampled a
         long Nakivubo channel and its tributaries from August 1995 to April19
         96. Samples were also taken from a control site located on a small ch
         annel which empties its content in Lake Nabugabo. The analysis of sam
         ples were carried out using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, P
         erkin-Elmer model 2380. Analysis of cocoyam metal burden showed that,
          the cocoyams concentrated some heavy metals a hundred times above th
         e levels recommended in higher plants. Some heavy metals were prefent
         ially accumulated more than others and the accumulation was, in decre
         asing order Cr, Pb, Cu, Fe and Zn. Heavy metal concentrations in the
         cocoyams and soils from the vicinity of National Water and Sewerage C
         orporation were relatively higher due to seepage of metals from the w
         aste waters. The extent of metal accumulation was directly related to
          their concentrations in soils.

SamEng:  In assessing the quaility of waste water sicharged from industries an
         d other point sources, water samples were collected at various sampli
         ng points Kampala and Jinja once every month. Five quality parameters
          namely, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD
         ), total phosphorous, Kjeldahl total nitrogen (KTN) and permanganate
         value (PV) were monitored at each point for a period of eight months.
          The study revealed that waste water from some industries located in
         Kampala and Jinja was heavily polluted with organic pollutants, phosp
         horous and nitrogenous wastes. The following ranges were recorded BOD
          2.3-1,680 mg/l, COD 6.0-30,900 mg/l, KTN 3.2-1703.6 mg/l, PV 1.1-396
          mg/l and T-P04 0.02-15.53.

SamEng:  The study which started in August in1994, aimed at assessing the exte
         nt of pollutant accumulation in Nakivubo channel and Lake Victoria se
         diments, result of industrial and domestic activities. The research c
         oncentrated on the industrial areas thought to contribute significant
         ly to the pollution of Lake Victoria. Work started with a review of e
         xisting literature on firms, industries and organisations dealing wit
         h chemicals in Uganda, and the distribution of questionnaires to synt
         hesise data on pollution sources. Sampling was done from August 19995
          up to March 1996, on a monthly basis. Samples were analysed for inor
         ganic nutrient pollutants (total phosphorous and total nitrogen) and
         heavy metals (Cu, Zn, MN, Cr, Pb and Fe). Total phosphorous was analy
         sed using a spectrophotometer (CE model 1010) and total nitrogen was
         determined titrimetrically using a 7.14x10**-3 M HC1. Heavy metals we
         re analysed using Atomic absorption Spectrophotometer (perkin model 2
         380). Other parameters such as pH, electroconductivity and organic ma
         tter,which are related to pollution were also determined. Total phosp
         horous varied between 227.50--4666.70 ppm, total nitrogen range was 3
         16.67--8616.67 ppm, Copper varied between 3.46--123.00 ppm, Zinc betw
         een 3.20--60ppm, Chromium, between 9.20--210.00 ppm, Manganese betwee
         n 44.76--2800ppm, Iron between 960.00--75466.70 ppm and Lead between
         5.30-- 202.89 ppm. The results indicated that sediments in the region
         s of the industrial establishments of Kampala and Jinja were generall
         y pollutted. Sediments within Lake Victoria and the sewage disposal s
         ite recorded excessively large concentrations of inorganic nutrients.
          Heavy metals were recorded in large concentrations within the region
         s of some of the industrial establishments.
