SamEng: The Rosa project investigates the use of analogy to enhance reuse of
object-oriented specifications. A repository stores analysis informat
ion about software system projects, as well as semantic information f
ound through an analysis of the concepts that describe the different
parts of these specifications. This semantic information is organized
in a term space, or semantic net, as part of the repository. In this
term space the concepts are linked through different types of relati
onships. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how linguistic k
nowledge can be used to organize the term space. We study areas where
semantic relations have been used, to draw on their findings. The st
ructure needs to be closely connected to the use of the term space to
          find analogies between specification models.

SamEng: Telelearning, while improving flexibility in time and space for indiv
idual learners, raises new challenges for collaborative learning rela
ted to the logistics and to the logistical support of collaboration.
Synchronization, exchange and sharing of information or documents req
uire mechanisms that can be a real burden or even an obstacle to lear
ning. These problems are absent from collaborative learning in a clas
sroom, from learning with one computer as a companion, and also from
traditional distance. An environment capable of supporting collaborat
ive telelearning needs to be knowledgeable about organizing and suppo
rting the collaboration. The challenges are to specify this knowledge
and to attribute specific roles to age nts active in this type of en
         vironment.

SamEng: Mapping is an important process of analogical reasoning, where corres
pondences between elements of a previous solution and a new problem a
re established. After recalling potential analogs from a long-term me
mory based on surface similarities, the followig mapping process capt
ures deeper similarities by establishing correspondences between elem
ents based on common relational structures. Ana analogical mapping pr
ocess is also constrained by a semantic component, which increases th
e probability for establishing correspondences between elements in th
e two analogs with similar meaning. A technique for applying neural n
etworks in analogical mapping process that includes both structural a
nd semantic constraints is described in this paper. An experiment fro
m object-oriented software engineering is presented, and reports prom
         ising results.

on the possibilities of Information Technology to enhance consistenc

SamEng: Tailoring is the adaptation of generic software applications such as
word processors, spreadsheets, e-mail systems, and drawing editors to
the specific work practices of a user organization. Tailoring shares
characteristics with both design and use of computer applications, b
ut a "design distance" separates them. An extensive literature survey
and analysis of emerging trends have identified three levels of tail

ools to support them are described, and examples are given.

SamEng: The paper explains the need for conceptual overview models of IS-arch
itecture related areas, and goes on to present a model of the problem
of aligning an IS-architecture with the enterprise it supports. It i
s claimed that the alignment problem has two fundamental axes, i.e.,
selecting an appropriate degree of centralisation for the IS architec
ture; and selecting an appropriate IS architecture given some degree
of centralisation. The nature of each axis is discussed, before the r
elation between them is clarified. The discussion stresses that desig
n of an IS-architecture involves a multitude of choices, all of which
should preferably be deliberately and explicitly made. Some existing
approaches to IS-architecture alignment are then discussed briefly i
n relation to the model, and it is pointed out that each approach ten
ds to focus only on a small subset of the total IS-architecture desig
n space. Therefore, choosing alignment approach implicitly involves a
major IS-architectural design choice. The need for new approaches wh
ich utilise the design space more fully is therefore pointed out, and
use of the model for this purpose is discussed.

ell under today, and most contemporary frameworks and methodologies f
or IS development provide several partial modelling languages which a

arried out on evaluating and comparing modelling languages at the ind
ividual level, few attempts have been made at evaluating and comparin
g multi-perspective methodologies as such. This paper explores the n
ature of multiple perspectives in relation to the ontology for inform
ation systems. The resulting analysis concludes that four meta constr
ucts - things, properties, conceptions and perspectives - are essenti
al to the understanding of problem domains with multiple perspectives
, and it is argued that the semantic quality of a problem analysis m
ethod is fundamentally related to how well it enhances understanding
of the problem domain. A framework is therefore proposed for evaluat
ing and comparing multi-perspective methods in terms of which semanti
c quality features they explore and how well they explore them for ea

nd extensible range of aspects of problem domain phenomena continge
nt on the problems at hand; 2) simultaneously co-represent several
aspects of the same problem domain phenomenon whenever needed; 3) r
eflect semantical relations between these aspects in the problem do
main models; and 4) extend the set of kinds of aspects that can be re
presented and visualised throughout problem analysis as understandi
ng of the problem domain and the problems at hand increases. An ap
proach called facet modelling of real-world problem domains is theref
ore outlined to deal with the complexity of contemporary analysis pro
blems. It is shown how facet models can be defined and visualised, b
efore facet modelling is discussed in relation to other recent ideas
and techniques in the IS development field. Case studies are currentl
y in progress to evaluate various implications of the facet modelling
          approach empirically.

SamEng: While most languages for information system (IS) representation focus
exclusively on information and information processes, real-world mod
elling emphasises the need to represent both informational and materi
al aspects of a problem domain in an integrated manner. This necessit
ates a representation framework which takes the inherent differences
between information and materials into account. The article motivates
real-world modelling, before important approaches to real-world mode
lling are surveyed with focus on their conceptual foundation. An inte
grated framework for real-world modelling is then outlined.

SamEng: Research on software reuse has to a large extent focused on low-level
software components. However, facilitating genuinely efficient reuse
of softw requires knowledge of a previous situation in which a syste
m behaves in some deep and fundamental sense analogically to the syst
em to be constructed. Achieving this goal can only be done by reuse a
t the highest level of description, that is, at the analysis level. I
n this paper we present the ROSA project, where we study how to imple
ment support for reuse of analysis models by analogy. The focus is on
how to transfer knowledge from one problem situation to a new proble
m situation. We base our knowledge on work in cognitive psychology, c
ognitive science, artificial intelligence, and software reuse.

SamEng: The mapping phase of analogical reasoning is constrained not only by
semantic knowledge, but also by deeper relations between the entities
of a cas This paper describes some experiments performed on the appl
ication of genetic algorithms to the mapping problem. We view the map
ping problem as an optimization problem where the objective function
must encompass both the structural and semantic constraints of analog
ical mapping. The experiments are done in the domain of software mode

SamEng: This paper presents an application of genetic algorithms in analogica
l reasoning. Analogical reasoning means to utilize structural and sem
antic similarities between relational descriptions of two situations
to establish new knowledge in one of the two situations. Here we expl
oit the properties of genetic algorithms as a method to solve discret
e optimization problems with many local optima. We focus on the mappi
ng phase of analogical reasoning, and represent this problem as an ob
jective function to be optimized by genetic algorithms. Examples and
experiments indicate that the approach has expressibility and efficie
ncy comparable to previous analogical mapping algorithms.

SamEng: Researchers of artificial intelligence in education have been
developing adaptive learning material for complex domains such as
         programming languag mathematics, medicine, physics,avionics
troubleshooting, pulp and paper mills, factories and electronics. The
actual learning material itself, however, is only part of the total
Learning Environment (LE) within which learning takes place. This
paper presents an extension to the brief overview of an LE first
described by Sandberg and Barnard (1993) and Sandberg (1994), and
later augmented by Sch neider and Peraya (1995). The LE is presented
as a conceptual glue which binds several areas of research in an
effort to provide a complete and cohesive environment whithin which
         the learning is central.
