Tittel: Caries Decline in Norwegian 18 Year Olds due to Treatment before Age 1
         2.

SamEng: The purpose of this study was to evaluate reasons for the caries decl
ine in the 18 year olds between 1985 and 1995. The caries status at a
ges 5, 12 18 was reported annually be the 19 counties. In addition, t
he following information was available: persons per dentist, proporti
on of children receiving treatment, use of fluoride tablets in 1977,
1979 and 1981, use of fissure sealeants in 1986, and proportion with
higher education. The DMFT score of 18 year olds declined by 36% from
          1985 to 1995; 10.2±0.75 (8.6-11.7)and 6.5±0.72 (5.0-7.7), n=19. Th
         e decline for 12 year olds was 42%; 3.4±0.36 (2.8-4.0); 1.9±0.31 (1
.4-2.6). The mean DT score was stable at 0.8 and 1.5 at ages 12 and 1
8, respectively. Cross-sectional increments from 12 to 18 were reduce
         d by 34% from 1985 to 1995; 6.8±0.54 vs. 4.5±0.5. Cohort analyses f
or children borne in 1973, 1975 and 1977 revealed no significant diff
         erence in DMFT increments from age 12 to 18: 3.8±0.46 (3.1-4.6); 4.0
         ±0.61 (2.8-4.9); 3.9±0.46 (3.1-4.8). Changes in DMFT at age 18 were
largely determined by the continuing decline of filled teeth at age
         12. Partial correlation analyses showed generally no effect of the in
depedent variables. Conclusion: The decline in FMFT of 12 and
18 year olds between 1985 and 1995 seems to be primarily attributable
to a reduction in FT before age 12. Abstract.

SamEng: The role of fluoride (F) dentifrices in caries decline was investigat
ed by assessing the effect of variation in their use on caries scores
among teenagers. The material comprised 211 subjects aged about 11 y
ears at base line and 18 years at the last examination. Pairs of post
erior bitewing radiographs were assessed by one examiner. Information
concerning dental health behavior was collected by questionnaire and
about treatment received from dental records. A reversal of the trad
itional DFS gender difference occurred during teenage years. Multivar
iate regression analyses showed an inverse relationship between varia
tion in F dentifrice use and current decay (D1S) at age 18 years (P<0
.04) and with caries incidence per year was (D1FS) during the whole o
bservation period (P<0.02). Total explained variance in 6-year D1FS i
ncrement scores was 29.5%, of which variation in toothbrushing behavi
or contributed 1.8 percentage points. While confirming the multifacto
rial nature of dental caries, these results also provided quantitativ
e evidence for the role of variation in F dentifrice use in caries in
         cidence and decline.
