SamEng:  115 primary (deciduous) teeth from different areas in Santiago de Chi
         le and 26 teeth from the town of Arica in the north of Chile were col
         lected by local dentists. The teeth were analyzed for their content o
         f lead, cadmium, mercury, zinc and copper, using atomic absorption sp
         ectrophotometry. The lead and cadmium contents in the primary teeth f
         rom Santiago were significantly higher than in the teeth from Arica,
         but the levels of copper were significantly lower. No significant dif
         ferences were found for mercury or zinc. A positive,significant corre
         lation was found between cadmium and lead for both the whole material
          and for Santiago alone. The Arica material showed a positive, signif
         icant correlation between mercury and lead, and between mercury and z
         inc. The average concentrations found probably do not represent a hea
         lth risk, but nevertheless there may be children living in areas with
          be low optimum conditions concerning these elements. Further investi
         gations are suggested.

SamEng:  The aim was to investigate nickel and chromium concentrations in sali
         va of patients with different types of fixed appliances. Saliva sampl
         es were collected from 47 orthodontic patients, ages 8 to 30 years. F
         our samples from each subject were collected: (1) before insertion of
          the appliance, (2) 1 to 2 days after, (3) 1 week after, and (4) 1 mo
         nth after insertion of the appliance. A considerable variation in the
          concentrations of both nickel and chromium was observed. No signific
         ant differences were found between the no-appliance samples and the s
         amples obtained after insertion of the appliances. The results sugges
         t that nickel and chromium concentrations of saliva are not significa
         ntly affected by fixed orthodontic appliances during the first month
         of treatment.

SamEng:  The autometallographic technique was used to demonstrate the
         localization of mercury in dorsal root ganglia of adult Wistar rats.
         The animals were either exposed to mercury vapour, 100 µg Hg
         m-3, 6 h day-1, 5 days per week, or treated
         with organic mercury in the drinking water, 20 mg CH3Hg Cl
         per litre, for 4 weeks. The effect of orally administered sodium
         selenite on the pattern of intracellular distribution of mercury in
         these two situations was investigated. In rats exposed to mercury
         vapour alone, faintstaining was present in ganglion cells. The
         selenite induced a conspicuous increase in the number of stained
         cells and in the intracellular stainin g intensity. In rats treated
         with organic mercury, mercury deposits were detected within ganglion
         cells and macrophages. The number of mercury-containing cells was
         increased by co-administration of selenite. In addition, satellite
         cells, the capsule and ve ssel walls were faintly stained. Twenty
         weeks after cessation of th e organic werefaintly stained. Twenty
         weeks after cessation of t he organicme rcury treatment, mercury
         staining was reduced. Again, selenite treatment enhanced staining
         intensity. When studied using the electron microscope, mercury was
         restricted to lysosomes,irrespective of treatments. The present study
         shows that the deposition of autometallographic mercury in the dorsal
         root ganglia depends on the chemical type of mercury, the co-admini
         stration of selenite and the length of the survival period.

SamEng:  Lead is one of the most important and widely distributed pollutants i
         n the environment. In the human population children are particularly
         at risk. Local dentists in all 19 counties in Norway collected 2746 p
         rimary teeth from 1990 to 1994. Tooth substance from whole, ground te
         eth were analyzed for lead concentration by electrothermal atomic abs
         orption spectrophotometry. The geometrical mean for the entire materi
         al was 1.27 µg lead / g tooth substance (S.D. 1.87). The mean lead le
         vels in each of the counties were significantly lower than those obta
         ined in a corresponding study in the 1970s. Two counties, Oslo and Ve
         st-Agder, had significantly higher lead levels than the majority of t
         he other counties. Tooth lead concentration and atmospheric depositio
         n of lead in the same areas were significantly and positively correla
         ted, as shown by analysis of naturally growing moss. We conclude that
          lead concentrations in primary teeth from children in Norway have be
         en reduced by approx. 50% from the 1970s to the 1990s. The reduction
         probably reflects a decrease in the environmental lead burden in Norw
         ay.
