SamEng:  The Joint Ocean Global Flux Study JGOFS is an international and multi
         disciplinary research program that aims at understanding the role of
         the oceans in the global carbon cycle, and how this system reacts to
         the rate of build-up of atmospheric CO2. The success of JGOFS depends
          greatly on the establishment of international data exchange and mana
         gement activities for all biogeochemical observations gathered to dat
         e. Thus, the policy of the JGOFS Data Management System aims to provi
         de scientists with complete and convenient access to all data collect
         ed and generated during the project. JGOFS fosters a culture of free
         international data exchange between project participants whilst prese
         rving the intellectual rights of data originators through due acknowl
         edgement of sources of data used. The proposed model used for JGOFS d
         ata management is a decentralised system with the leading role played
          by project data centres operating at the national level. Examples of
          these are the JGOFS data management offices in the USA, Germany and
         France, and available resources within the national oceanographic dat
         a centres in Canada, India, Japan and the UK. The work of these centr
         es is co-ordinated by the Data Management Task Team (DMTT), to ensure
          that the data management requirements of JGOFS are satisfied. The JG
         OFS International Project Office (IPO) assists the DMTT in the implem
         entation of its objectives and provides the link between JGOFS and IG
         BP-DIS. WWW servers have been installed at JGOFS data management offi
         ces to provide information about the progress of their respective nat
         ional programs as well as giving an account of their data sets holdin
         gs/location and metadata. The JGOFS international Web site at the IPO

SamEng:  Sedimentary successions in small coastal lakes situated from 0 to 11
         m above the 7000 year BP shoreline along the western coast of Norway,
          contain distinctive deposit, very different from the sediments above
          and below. The deposit is interpreted to be the result of a tsunami
         inundating the coastal lakes. An erosional unconformity underlies the
          tsunami facies and is traced throughout the basins, with most erosio
         n found at the seaward ortion of the lakes. The lowermost tsunami fac
         ies is a graded or massive and that locally contains marine fos sils.
          The sand thins and decreases in grain size in a landward direction.
         Above follows coarse organic detritus with rip-up clasts, here termed
          "organic conglomerate", and finer organic detritus. The tsunami unit
          generally fines and thins upwards. The higher basins (6-11 m above t
         he 7000 year shoreline) show one sand bed, whereas basins closer to t
         he sea level 7000 years ago, may show several sand beds separated by
         organic detritus. These alternations in the lower basins may reflect
         repeated waves of sea water entering the lakes. In basins that were s
         ome few metres below sea level at 7000 years BP, the tsunami deposit
         is more minerogenic and commonly present as graded sand beds, but als
         o in some of these shallow marine bas ins organic-rich facies occur b
         etween the sand beds. The total thickness of the tsunami deposit is 2
         0-100 cm in most studied sites. An erosional and depositional model o
         f the tsunami facies is developed.

SamEng:  The Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS)exists to assess more accura
         tely, and understand better the processes controlling, regional to gl
         obal and seasonal to interannual fluxes of carbon between the atmosph
         ere, surface ocean and ocean interior, and their sensitivity to clima
         te changes. Biogeochemistry affects the ocean carbon cycle by convert
         ing inorganic carbon to organic forms and by creating particles that
         sink through the water instead of moving with it. While local field p
         rograms measure biological variables, nutrients and carbon, and somet
         imes rates, modelling can address the questions: How well are the flu
         xes and processes known; what alternatives can be ruled out? What is
         the range of predicted exports; how constrained is it by physical for
         cing? The workshop questions were: What do different models suggest a
         bout ecosystem structure and carbon flow? How are suggestions related
          to model formulations, especially complexity? What model parameters
         are well constrained, and how does that vary across models? Do the da
         ta give us enough information to choose among candidate models? The e
         mphasis at the workshop turned out to be largely technical questions
         about how to formulate and explore models and how to formulate compar
         isons between models
