SamNor:  Unstimulated saliva was collected from orhtodontic patients and subje
         cted to combined gas-chromatography and gas-chromatography/ mass-spec
         trometry analyses.  Saliva was collected before insertion of removalb
         le orthodontic appliances made of cold-cured resins. Saliva was then
         collected 1-2 months after insertion of the appliances and 1 week aft
         er they had been removed.  Phenyl benzoate (PB) and phenyl salicylate
          (PS) were identified in pooled saliva samples from patients wearing
         the appliances.  Biphenyl and 2-methoxy-4-hydroxy-benzo-phenone in ad
         dition to PB and PS were identified in a study with in vitro specimen
         s made of orthodontic resin.  The leaching of compounds from these te
         st specimens processed by a powdering technique and a pre-mix techniq
         ue was compared.

SamNor:  The sensitization potential of two orthodontic bonding materials, one
         conventional premix product and one nonmix product, was evaluated by
         a modified guinea pig maximization test. The nonmix product,
         consisting of a liquid to be applied to the tooth surface and a paste
         which was placed on the bracket base, caused reaction in 50% of the
         tested animals. This material should be considered to be a possible
         cause of allergy in patients or professionals handling it.

SamNor:  The surfaces of 43 stainless steel miniplates and 19 titanium minipla
         tes with matching screws of the same materials were studied after ret
         rieval with respect to surface degradation. Stereomicroscopic and sca
         nning electron microscopic (SEM) examinations were performed, and sur
         face roughness and hardness of the plates were measured.  Defects of
         mechanical nature which could be traced back to handling procedures w
         ere found in all stainless steel and titanium devices.  Metal tongues
          and splinters were occasionally found associated with screws threads
          and in the periphery of plate screw holes.  Corrosion defects were o
         bserved in about 1/5 of the stainless steel plates, restricted to the
          countersink area.  Corrosion defects were also found on the chamfer
         of the underside of stainless steel screw heads.  None of the titaniu
         m devices showed evidence of corrosion.  The surface roughness of the
          titanium plates was higher than for the stainless steel plates.  The
          retrieved plates were rougher than the new plates.
