SamNor:  Excessive fluoride (F) in drinking water should be removed, but simpl
         e, inexpensive methods of fluoride removal are not available. this st
         udy examines the F  -binding capasity of clay and clayware, especiall
         y the effect of the firing temperature on the F -binding process. A s
         eries of pots were made from ordinary potter's clay and fired at 500-
         1000 C. Likewise, small clay bricks were fired and then crushed and s
         ieved. NaF solutions containing 10 mg/l F (10 ppm F ) were prepared.
         Suitable aliquots of the solutions were poured intio clay pots or exp
         osed tol powdered clayware. samples were taken at storage periods of
         30 min to 20 days and analysed for F  by ion-selective electrodes. Th
         e rate and capacity of F -binding in the clayware varied with the fir
         ing temperature. Clay fired at app roximately 600oC was most effectiv
         e. Temperature over 700 C caused a decline in F -binding, and pottery
          fired at 900oC and above seemed un able to remove F  from water. Pot
         s fired at 500 C or less cracked in water. The findings indicate that
          clayware, fired at an optimal temperature, may be of practical value
          for partial defluoridation of drinking water.

SamNor:  This study evaluated microbial colonization of periodontal pockets su
         bjected to root instrumentation with a curet or a rotating diamond. T
         en maxillary and 10 mandibular subgingival pockets were established i
         n the canines of 5 beagle dogs. The subgingival root surface areas we
         re debrided by a sharp curet or a flame-shaped, fine-grained, rotatin
         g diamond point. The dogs were fed a plaque-inducing diet for 70 days
         . Specimens from both instrumentation groups were then harvested and
         prepared for stereomicroscopic and scanning electron microscopic eval
         uation. Grading of the extent of subgingival colonization was perform
         ed in coded specimens directly on the fluorescent screen of the scann
         ing electron microscope in a grid-counting system. Error of the metho
         d was assessed by duplicate counts. The subgingival roor surface area
         s were divided into 3 zones: cervical, middle, and apical, and statis
         tical differences between these zones as well as between the 2 instru
         mentation groups were calculated. The results revealed that curet-tre
         ated surfaces were smoother and promoted less subgingival colonizatio
         n than diamondtreated surfaces. The difference in amount of bacterial
          colonization between the 2 groups was statistically significant (P<0
         .05) in all zones. Bacterial colonization decreased in apical directi
         on in both instrumentation groups. For the diamond-treated specimens,
          this decrease was significant (P<0.05) between each of the 3 zones.
         In the curet -treated specimens, the decrease was significant only be
         tween the cervical and the apical zone (P<0.05). The present study ha
         s demonstrated that subgingival instrumentation roughness significant
         ly influences the subgingival microbial colonization.

SamNor:  The purpose of this study was to examine the 3-dimensional architectu
         re of the microvascular system of the rat periodontal ligament (PDL).
          Vascular corrosion casts were prepared and examined by scaning elect
         ron microscopy. Cervically, arterioles and venules communicated with
         the profuse capillary network of the gingiva. The mid-root segment of
          the PDL contained arterioles and venules that mainly coursed occluso
         -apically near the alveolar wall, as well as capillary loops located
         closer to the root surface. Arterioles entered the PDL throughvascula
         r canals from the bone marrow, then coursed corronally and branched i
         nto an interconnested network of capillaries. The capillaries formed
         hairpin loops pointing corronally. Att he tip, the loops were enlarge
         d in diameter and had an irregular luminar surface. The capillaries t
         hen coursed apically, anstomosing freely, until entering a venule. La
         rge venules mainly followed a coronal-apical path, giving the PDL vas
         culature a palisade-like apperance. These vessels either left the PDL
          through vascular canals in the alveolar wall or connectedin an apica
         l, venous cap with venules exiting through the apical foramen. The re
         sults show that the microvasculature forms a highly organized system
         presumably related to the specializ ed functions of the periodontium.
          Cervically, a dense capill ary system may be required for antimicrob
         ial defense and rapid tissue turnover. The vasculature in the middle
         segment supports the suspensory structures, while the veous cap in th
         e apical region may be designed to cushion masticatory forces. The la
         rge vessel diameter combined with an irregular lumina su rface at the
          tip of capillary loops indicates reduced blood velocity and turbulen
         ce in the functional part of the PDL vasculature where exchange of me
         tabolities mainly occurs.

SamNor:  Effects of a topically applied growth factor combination on fibroblas
         t miration collagen fiber formation and bone regeneration were studie
         d in standarized periodontal defects in 4 beagle dogs. Following elev
         ation of facial mucoperiosteal flaps, 3 mm in diameter, were made thr
         ough the cortical bone and into the dentin of maxillary and mandibula
         r teeth. Collagensponges, imprignated with 200 ng insulin-like growth
          factor II, 20 ng basic fibroblast growth factor and 6 ng transformin
         g growth factor beta I were to defects in right or left quadrants and
          the flaps repositioned and sutured. Contralateral control defects re
         ceived the collagen with vehicle only. Expe rimental procedures were
         staggered to allow observations of healing 3, 7, 10 and 14 days after
          surgery. Histometric analysis showed no di fferences in fibroblast a
         nd collagen density between control and growth factor defects. Bone r
         egeneration was significantly greater in control than in growth facto
         r defects 10 and 14 days after surgery. The rate of healing generally
          appeared more affected by intra-dog var iations or procedu ral varia
         tions than by the growth factor combination.
