The EuroCRIS Maribor Meeting

A short report by Vigdis Kvalheim

Due to the lack of minutes proper in advance of the Amsterdam meeting, a short report of the meeting was presented by Ms Vigdis Kvalheim of the Norwegian Social Science Data Services.

The 8th EuroCRIS platform meeting took place in Maribor, Slovenia, 6th and 7th October 2000 and was hosted by dr. Dejan Dinevski, IZUM Institute of Information Science, also in charge of the SICRIS

14 participants were present at the meeting, representing 11 countries.

The main discussion topics were:

The Platform

  • The mission and strategy of the platform: Who and what are the platform members? Who are they for?
  • Target groups and funding/need of membership fee
  • The degree of formalisation
  • The relationship towards European Comission
The next CRIS conference
  • Where are we going? What is the purpose of the CRIS conferences?
  • Should they be organized and funded by EU or by the platform? The choice  iwould lead to two completely differnt kind of conferences, purpose, professional profile, financial scale, etc.
Topics for the next Platform Meeting in Brussels (venue later changed to Amsterdam)
  • The World of CRIS - What is new?
  • Multilingual thesauri and classification schemes
  • Metadata techniques and search engines
  • Case studies

There was a general wish that the discussions at the next  Platform Meetings should be restricted to a smaller set of topics compared to previous meetings.

Conclusions:

CRIS conferences should "be taken back" and the platform should aim at a smaller event than the preceeding conferences. Wolfgang Adamczak was asked to organise CRIS2002 in Kassel.

The program of the Amsterdam meeting, as we now find it here today, reflects very well the intentions set forth at the Maribor meeting.
